Wednesday, May 11, Great Teaching Lasts a Lifetime: Teacher Appreciation & Rally ~ 3:30 -5:00 pm Civic Center Plaza, Richmond, CA ~ The United Teachers of Richmond and Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin celebrate and spotlight West Contra Costa Unified School District Teachers. Assemblymember Nancy Skinner’s office was present to add words of appreciation. DeJean Middle School teacher and students provided music and songs. Mel Collins, CTA Who Award, local Teacher Excellence Awards and County Teacher of the Year recipients were recognized. Gretchen Borg, Art Teacher at Samuel Gompers Continuation High School talked about her students community Mural project.

Those in the Temple City area, TCHS students are organizing a protest at the next TCUSD district meeting on May 25 at 6pm. Band together with students, teachers, and parents as we fight against the budget cuts and teacher layoffs. TCUSD District office is right across Temple City Park on Las Tunas Blvd.

June 2, Davis. The leadership of 25 Teachers’ Salaries, the campaign for public school funding, will speak in favor of the resolution expected to be on the agenda of the Davis board of trustees. We expect the resolution will make the relationship between spending by the federal government and the money available to states and school districts for public education.

Teachers with the Ocean Charter Teachers Association in western Los Angeles leafleted parents on Tuesday afternoon as students left their school sites. OCTA teachers participated in the parent outreach by leafleting and talking to Ocean Charter School parents about how they can make their voices heard regarding current proposed state budget cuts to education.
The flyers they provided include information about contacting legislators, emailing, and attending rallies and demonstrations. They invited and urged parents and board members to participate as well.

Monday — Signing “State of Emergency” Postcards to be mailed to our local Republican members of the State Legislature.
Tuesday — Public Grade-In at Starbucks in Yucaipa near Vons. All are welcome! Come join us!
Wednesday — Site Unity events coordinated with YCEA, CSEA, and District Administration. Sign more postcards!
At Yucaipa High School: Come join us at 7:15 to leaflet the parents as they drop their students off at YHS.
Friday — Join us at Mill Creek for the YCEA Retirement Recognition Dinner. We will be providing updates of the statewide events happening.

Roseville Galleria Grade-In: Educators are gathering together at local malls to correct papers.
On Tuesday, May 10th, teachers are asked to go to the Roseville Galleria and correct your papers from 4 to 6 pm. We are hoping that there will be enough of us that people will notice and we will be able to share our concerns regarding the state of educational funding.

Fortuna, California. Teachers, students, administrators, and all interested community members will line Main Street and 12th Street in Fortuna on May 11, 2011 from 4:30 to 5:30. We will be handing out fact sheets about the “state of education” and our state budget; we’ll carry signs; distribute postcards for citizens to mail to our legislators and generally put out the word about this state of emergency.

Teachers from Manteca, Tracy, Linden, Ripon and the surrounding areas will hold a rally on Monday, May 9th from 330pm until 530pm at the corner of Main Street and Louise Avenue in Manteca. 262 red balloons will be flying, one for every teacher that received a layoff notice 2 years ago. Long Beach: On Tuesday, May 10, Teachers Association of Long Beach members from each school will walk in each school neighborhood talking to community members about the impact of the cuts on their schools. On Friday May 13 , we will be “saying goodbye” to hundreds of teachers who are getting final layoff notices unless we can extend the already existing temporary taxes. After school on Friday we will all be getting on the Metro and heading to Pershing Square, joining thousands for a rally to save our schools.

MONDAY, MAY 9TH- Focus on LEGISLATIVE contact. All teachers and pararprofessionals are being asked to call or email their legislator.
TUESDAY, MAY 10TH-Focus on PARENTS. In collaboration with site PTO’s we will be asking each teacher and several parents to hand out a small flyers to parents at drop off or pick up depending on what works best for your site. We expect each teacher to pass on five flyers (teachers will pick a parent to help him or her to show that it’s not a union issue, it’s a people who care issue.)
WEDNESDAY, MAY 11TH- Focus on EDUCATORS AND ALLIES. The STOE team will be making and delivering thank you notes to our public employee association allies: nurses, police, and fire fighters. The notes will both express our gratitude and ask these allies to contact their legislator.
THURSDAY, MAY 12TH- Focus on REVENUE. The STOE team will be publishing an article that communicates the very small impact these tax extensions put on have on the average Californian’s pocketbook and the dramatic impact it has on school funding.

Kern High School Teachers Association is starting the week before with it’s members by distributing promotional material about the week’s events and informational flyers each day on different issues (Pensions, State Budget, Tax Fairness) and by doing all of the following during the week of action:
MONDAY – Legislative Appointments; Lunch Parties at Each School Site (Form Letters to be signed by members to each local legislator and Palm Cards available for members to utilize the CTA 1-800 number to call legislators); Executive Board will have a “fax party” later in the afternoon to fax all of the letters to our local legislators
TUESDAY – 3′x8′ Banners in front of each school (200 pencils on it with the statement “Each pencil represents 100 teachers who will lose their jobs this year in the state of California.”), Distribution of flyers to parents before/after school with site specific impacts of cuts, Service Center “Grade In” from 4-6pm
WEDNESDAY – Massive Sierra Service Center Day of the Teacher celebration at Yokuts Park from 4-8pm with “Advocacy Row” (Letters, Phone Calls and Graveyard “Death of Schools” Photo Op – all to be sent to legislators), BBQ, Entertainment, Guest Speakers, etc.

Monday, May 9 Teachers will focus on Connie Conway our local legislator.
1. Teachers will use their duty free lunch to write a personal letter to Connie Conway.
2. A Rep / Volunteer will bring the letters to our gathering outside her local office for delivery.
3. 300 volunteers will be stationed outside her office wearing shirts saying I will be a lay-off! Perfect photo op for the press as we deliver the letters to her office.
4. Also on this day, 300 teachers (maybe more) will begin a week long occupation of the State Capitol Building demanding that Legislators do the right thing.
Tuesday, May 10 The focus will be on Parents getting them to contact Connie Conway.
1. Before and after school Teachers will be handing out informational leaflets to parents that will also include contact information.
2. PTA will send a delegation to Connie Conway’s local office.
Wednesday, May 11 Appreciate Educators and Allies (California’s Day of the Teacher)
1. We will celebrate our day at the Cellar Door from 4 to 6 PM.
2. This Day is devoted to our Labor Coalition Partners going to Connie Conway’s Office.
3. We will honor our Golden Apple Award Winners during the celebration
4. Our Allies will join us as we celebrate our profession.
Thursday, May 12 Revenue Thursday
1. We will be using our Local Business Leaders. Faith and Community Leaders and our School Leaders to contact Connie Conway.
2. Our hope is to get the heavy hitters to amp up the pressure.
Friday, May 13 NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL
1. Freeing of the 300 hostages at the State Capitol Building
2. Local Activity We will close of Mainstreet and have a large rall with all of our allies and other Teaching Associations in front of Connie Conway’s Office.

Associated Chaffey Teachers are participating in the following:
Monday, May 9: Voter registration drive at each school site; distributing legislative contact information.
Tuesday, May 10: Holding “Grade-In” at local area malls. Many local chapters are also participating. They are going to the mall, seting up tables and will grade papers (or do any type of school work they normally do at home). They will wear RED for public education and put small signs on the tables: “I am a teacher. Ask me what I am doing.” This is a fun activity to meet other teachers, get public support and show the public that a teacher’s work doesn’t end at the end of the school day.

Thursday, May 12: They are visiting all their school sites and explaining the worst case scenario if the tax extensions don’t pass.

Inglewood: The Inglewood Teachers Association will hold a Rally to Save Our Schools at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 in front of Inglewood City Hall, One Manchester Blvd. Come support Inglewood schools as they face a massive financial shortfall. Urge Sacramento to solve a problem that is their responsibility, and tell lawmakers to pass a budget that protects Inglewood students.

Sonoma County Educators Council is an organization of Presidents and Bargaining Chairs from over 40 CTA local chapters around Sonoma County. The council has organized the following events:
Monday, May 9: Collect and deliver postcards to Legislative offices in Downtown Santa Rosa at 4 pm. (Postcards will be distributed at the May 4 SCEC Meeting).
Tuesday, May 10: Distribute flyers to parents outside of school sites and surrounding neighborhoods
Wednesday, May 11: Attend Wednesday Night Market in Downtown Santa Rosa (5-7 pm) and let our community know about the State of Emergency efforts.
Thursday, May 12: Picket & distribute information at Coddingtown & Santa Rosa Plaza (4-6pm)
Friday, May 13: Attend San Francisco Civic Center Rally at 4pm. Sonoma and Mendocino County Educators are invited to reserve a seat on the bus we’ve chartered to San Francisco. (Reservations must be made by the Wednesday, May 4 SCEC Meeting date!)

San Leandro Teachers’ Protest March May 3

Members of the San Leandro Teachers Association will be marching and rallying on Tuesday, May 3, as part of the CTA State of Emergency campaign calling attention to local cuts, which included pink slips for 24 district teachers, cutting elementary P.E. and raising class sizes. The school district has had to cut $4.4 million from its budget.
“This is an emergency,” said Jon Sherr, president of the San Leandro Teachers Association. “We need the San Leandro community to be aware that it’s not business as usual around here.”
Educators from Bancroft Middle School, Jefferson Elementary and McKinley Elementary will begin marching at 3:05 p.m. to San Leandro High School, 330 Bancroft Ave. Speakers at a rally there will include educators and San Leandro Mayor Stephan Cassidy, Superintendent Cindy Cathey and Josie Camacho, acting executive secretary-treasurer of the Alameda Central Labor Council.
